Turn lecture notes into a study guide that shows the gaps
To turn lecture notes into a study guide with AI, have it organize notes you took and point out gaps. You fill the gaps from class. Follow your school's AI policy. This is not a paper to hand in.
Next step: do Step 1. Copy the box, fill in the blanks, and paste it into the chat.
A prompt is the message you paste. A Director check is a short look before you use the result.
What you'll need
- Notes from one lecture, in your words or copied from the board
- The class name and the topic
- Your school's AI rules. Organizing your own notes is studying. Turning the guide in as an assignment is not
Making question cards is a different guide: Turn lecture notes into flashcards. Do that after this one, not instead of checking the gaps.
Step 1: Organize only what you wrote
Turn these lecture notes into a study guide. Use only what is in the notes.
Class and topic: [paste]
My notes:
[paste]
Give me:
1. Sections with short headings
2. Under each heading, the points from my notes, in plain sentences
3. Terms I used without defining them
4. Questions the notes raise and do not answer
5. A "not in my notes" list if you are tempted to add outside knowledge. Put those ideas there, not in the guide.
Do not write an essay, a discussion post, or a summary I could submit as the assignment.
Step 2: Fill the gaps from class, not from the chat
The useful part is the list of missing definitions and unanswered questions. Look those up in the slides, the reading, or what you remember the professor saying. Type the answers yourself.
Here are the gaps I filled, in my words:
[paste]
Add them under the right headings.
If I contradicted my earlier notes, show both lines and ask me which one the professor said.
Do not smooth the contradiction into a new fact.
Step 3: Stop before it becomes a paper
A study guide is for you. If an assignment says "submit a summary of the lecture," write that summary yourself from the guide. The guide is notes. It is not the submission.
When the gaps are filled, make cards from the same notes with Turn lecture notes into flashcards. Do not ask this chat to do the cards too, or you will skip the recall.
Common mistakes
- Pasting the reading and asking for a guide so you never read it.
- Keeping the "not in my notes" ideas in the main guide because they sound smart.
- Handing the guide in as the homework.
- Skipping the flashcard step and rereading the guide the night before the test. Rereading feels like studying. Questions are studying. A weekly version is a ChatGPT study routine.
Privacy: what not to paste
Your notes are yours. Do not paste another student's notes with their name, an exam, or a private message from a teacher. If the lecture included a classmate's personal story, leave the name out.
Director check: look before you use it
- Did every main-guide sentence start in your notes or in a gap you filled? If not, move it out.
- Can you define the terms with the guide closed? If not, those terms are the next study block.
- Are you about to submit this file? Don't. Write the assignment yourself if there is one.
- Does this class allow AI help with notes? If the policy says no AI, organize the notes by hand.
One extra tip
If a section still makes no sense after you check the reading, use Understand a hard reading on that section only. Then come back and fill the gap in your own words. The School hub has the set.
Common questions
Is this the flashcard page?
No. This page organizes your notes and finds gaps. When you want questions to practice, use the flashcard workflow. Doing both from one paste is how the pages stay different.
Can I paste the professor's slides instead of my notes?
Slides are a start. Add what you wrote in class, or the guide will miss the examples the professor said out loud. Do not paste a graded assignment.
What if the guide adds facts that were not in the lecture?
Delete them. Mark anything extra as "not from class" and check the textbook before you study it. The chat did not attend the lecture.
