Study for an exam without AI doing it for you

Turn AI into a tutor that quizzes you, explains what you get wrong, and spaces out review, so you actually learn the material instead of copying answers.

School🛠 ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude (free)⏱ 30 minutes per session✅ Quiz yourself, don't copy

What you'll need

  • Your class notes, study guide, or the list of topics on the exam
  • 30 minutes and no other tabs open

Step 1: Set AI up as a tutor, not an answer machine

You are my tutor for [course]. My exam covers: [paste topics or study guide].
Rules:
- Never give me the answer before I try.
- Ask me one question at a time and wait for my reply.
- If I'm wrong, give a hint first. Only explain after my second try.
- Mix easy recall questions with "explain why" questions.
- Track which topics I miss.
Start with a quick 5-question warm-up.

Step 2: Answer in your own words

Type real answers, even if you're unsure. Guessing and getting corrected is exactly how memory gets stronger.

Step 3: Get your weak-spot report

Stop the quiz. List the topics I struggled with, explain each one simply with an example, and give me a 10-minute review plan for tomorrow.

Step 4: Come back tomorrow

Start a new session with the weak-spot list. Spacing your review over several days beats one long cram session.

Director check

  • Can you explain each topic without AI open? Try teaching one out loud to an empty room.
  • Does the AI's explanation match your notes and textbook? If not, trust your course materials and ask your instructor.
  • Did you do the thinking? If AI typed most of the words, you didn't study. Start again with shorter questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is using AI to study cheating?

Using AI as a tutor to explain concepts and quiz you is generally fine and is one of the most effective ways to study. Having it complete graded work for you usually isn't. Always follow your teacher's and school's AI policy.

How do I make ChatGPT quiz me?

Paste your notes or topic list and ask it to ask you one question at a time, wait for your answer, then tell you if you're right and why. Ask it to revisit the ones you miss.

Can AI be wrong about my course material?

Yes. It can be confidently wrong, especially on specific facts or your instructor's definitions. Treat your textbook and class notes as the source of truth.
