Turn lecture notes into flashcards you can actually answer

To turn lecture notes into flashcards with AI, make questions from your own notes and practice from memory. The cards are a study tool, not something to hand in. Follow your school's AI policy.

Next step: do Step 1. Copy the box, fill in the blanks, and paste it into the chat.

A prompt is the message you paste. A Director check is a short look before you use the result.

What you'll need

  • Notes from one lecture or one chapter, in your words or the professor's
  • Your school's AI rules for this class
  • Something to review with tomorrow, even a notes app

Step 1: Turn notes into questions, not a summary

Here are my notes from [class, lecture topic]:
[paste]

Make 20 flashcards as a two-column list: Question | Answer.
Rules:
- Questions should force recall ("Why does…", "What happens if…", "Define… in this class's terms"), not yes/no.
- Answers must come only from my notes. If the notes don't say it, skip the card.
- Mark any answer you are unsure of with "CHECK NOTES."
- Do not write an essay, a discussion post, or solutions to a graded problem set.
- Keep each answer to 2 sentences.

Step 2: Fix the CHECK NOTES cards

Open your notes. Correct any card that simplified the idea into something your professor did not say. Delete cards you don't understand yet. Those topics need a reread, not a prettier card.

Step 3: Practice with the answer hidden

Cover the answer column. Say your answer, then look. For each miss:

I missed this card.
Question: [paste]
My answer: [what you said]
The note's answer: [paste]

Give me one hint that points back to the idea, then one new question on the same idea.
Do not write a paragraph I could submit.

Step 4: Retry the misses tomorrow

A card you got right once is not learned. Redo the misses the next day before you add a new lecture.

Director check: look before you use it
  • Could you answer five cards with the chat closed? If not, you collected cards. You didn't study.
  • Does each answer match your notes or the textbook? Fix drift before it sticks.
  • Are you about to paste these into a graded quiz? Don't. Cards are for practice.
  • Does this class allow AI at all? If the policy says no, stop and make the cards by hand from the same notes.
One extra tip

After a miss, switch on ChatGPT's Study and learn tool if your account shows it. Ask it to give a hint instead of flipping the answer. You still write the correction in your own words.

If the notes are still a pile, organize them first with Turn lecture notes into a study guide. That page finds gaps. This one makes the questions. Do not ask either chat to do both.

Common questions

Is making flashcards with AI cheating?

Using your notes to quiz yourself is studying. Pasting a graded problem set and asking for the answers is not. Follow your teacher's and school's AI policy.

How many cards should I make?

Start with 15 to 25 from one lecture. A huge pile you never review is worse than a short pile you miss and retry.

What if a card disagrees with the professor?

Trust the lecture and the reading. Fix the card. The chat did not sit in class.
