To plan holiday gift shopping with AI, write one note per person, set a budget and a delivery date, and ask for a shortlist with the exact model and size. Leave price, shipping, and returns blank until you read them on the retailer page. The chat does not buy.
Next step: do Step 1. Copy the box, fill in the blanks, and paste it into the chat.
A prompt is the message you paste. A Director check is a short look before you use the result.
Who is this for?
This page is for someone buying holiday gifts, including a Black Friday or other sale weekend, who wants the list done before the cart. You already know who you are buying for. You will set the budget and the last day a gift still has to arrive. You want a shortlist with the exact model and size, then a total you can add yourself. You do not want a chat that invents a price, a ship date, or a return window.
It is a planning page. It is not shopping advice, and it is not a promise that a sale price is the lowest one. Prices, stock, and policies change. You check the retailer page before you pay.
ChatGPT has a feature called shopping research. Two official pages describe it, and this guide uses only what those pages say:
- Using shopping research in ChatGPT (OpenAI Help)
- Introducing shopping research in ChatGPT (OpenAI, November 24, 2025)
The help page says shopping research is for decisions with comparisons, tradeoffs, or several limits. You describe what you need. It can ask about brand, size, or whether you care more about performance, comfort, style, or price. It may use merchant product data, public product pages, and other retail sources. After a few minutes it can return a buyer's guide with a few top picks, why each one fits, tradeoffs, links to merchants, and a comparison. The same page says the result can still be wrong. Before you buy, confirm the final price, taxes, fees, and shipping on the retailer's website, check size and color, and read the return and warranty policies if they matter.
That help page also says ads are separate from shopping research. Do not treat an ad as one of your picks. A separate help page, Shopping with ChatGPT Search, says product results are not ads, and that some eligible products and merchants can show Instant Checkout so you pay inside ChatGPT. This guide does not use Instant Checkout. You click through, you read the retailer page, and you pay there. The November 2025 announcement says the same click-through for shopping research: if you want to purchase, you go to the retailer's site.
The help page says your shopping-research chats are not shared with retailers. It also says that if ChatGPT memory is on, shopping research can use what it already knows about you. You can turn memory off in personalization settings. A gift list does not need anyone's home address, card number, or school.
If you do not see shopping research, the rest of this page still works in a normal chat. You paste the pages. The habit of refusing a made-up price is Catch facts the AI made up. The habit of asking for options before you pick is Ask for options and tradeoffs before you decide.
Two gifts that are close, once you have the pages open, belong on Compare two products before you buy either one. The cap you set belongs with Make a monthly budget if the month is already tight. A holiday meal is a different list: Plan Thanksgiving dinner with AI.
What do you need before you start?
Write this down before you open the chat. The note is the brief.
- One note per person: likes, dislikes, and gifts you already gave them. First names are enough
- A budget you set. One number for the whole list, or one number per person. The chat does not get to raise it
- The last day the gift still has to arrive. If a sale ends sooner, use the earlier date
- The size, age, or other limit that would make a gift wrong. A shirt size you know. A "no scented candles" you were told
- Two or three product pages you already have open, if you have them. If you do not, shopping research can look, and you still open what it links
You do not need a paid plan for the note and the shortlist. Shopping research, on the November 2025 announcement, was rolling out to logged-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro on mobile and web. The help page does not promise it is on every account today. If you do not see it, paste pages into the chat you already have.
How do you write one note per person?
A pile of names gets a pile of generic gifts. One note forces the likes, the dislikes, and the gift you already gave. "Something nice" is how the same candle shows up twice.
Leave off street addresses, card numbers, account logins, and the name of a child's school. A size or an age is useful. A mailing address is not. The chat does not ship anything.
Help me plan gifts. Do not invent prices, ratings, ship dates, discounts, or return rules. If a fact is not in my notes or on a page I paste, write NOT LISTED.
People, one note each:
- [name]: likes [list]. Dislikes [list]. Past gifts I will not repeat: [list]. Size or other limit: [or none]. Must arrive by: [date].
- [name]: likes [list]. Dislikes [list]. Past gifts I will not repeat: [list]. Size or other limit: [or none]. Must arrive by: [date].
Budget I set for the whole list: [amount]. Do not go over it.
Date I need every gift in hand: [date].
Give me back the notes as a clean list, one person per block. Flag any person whose note is too thin to shop (no like, no limit). Do not suggest products yet. Then stop.
If a note comes back with a product idea already in it, delete the idea. You asked for the notes. Ask for a plan before the work is the same stop: the list of people is the plan, and the shortlist waits until you say the notes are right.
Work, for a team gift or a client gift your office allows. Do not paste a coworker's home address or a client's contract.
Help me plan a workplace gift. Do not invent prices, ship dates, or return rules.
Who it is for: [team, client, or one person, first name or role].
What they have mentioned liking: [only what I actually heard].
What is off limits at work: [list, such as alcohol or anything personal].
Budget the office already set: [amount]. I will not raise it.
Need it in hand by: [date].
Rewrite this as one note. Flag anything I did not actually say. Do not suggest products yet. Then stop.
School, when you are buying a real gift, not writing a paper. If this is an assignment, you write the assignment. Follow your teacher's rules.
This is for a gift I am buying, not for a paper I will turn in. Do not write anything I will hand in. Follow my teacher's rules.
Person: [first name]. Likes: [list]. Dislikes: [list]. Past gift I will not repeat: [or none].
Budget I set: [amount]. Must arrive by: [date].
Rewrite this as one note. Do not suggest products yet. Then stop.
Life is the family prompt at the top of this step. Use that one when the list is your household.
How do you set the budget and the delivery date in the same message?
The budget is a ceiling you already chose. The date is the last day you can still use the gift. A Black Friday listing is not a different kind of fact. It is still a price and a delivery promise you have to see on the retailer page. If the sale ends before your delivery date, the earlier date is the one that matters, and you type that date. The chat does not know when a sale ends.
If the whole list is more than the month can hold, stop and sort the month on Make a monthly budget before you add gifts. This page will not invent a cheaper total.
Here are the notes I kept:
[paste the cleaned notes]
Budget ceiling: [amount]. Delivery deadline: [date].
Do not suggest gifts yet.
Tell me, in one short list:
1. Which people fit in the ceiling if I split it evenly, and which notes are too thin to shop
2. Whether the deadline is the same for everyone
3. What I should delete if the ceiling is too low for the headcount
Do not invent a price to make the math work. Then stop.
If the reply tells you to spend more than you typed, ignore that line. The ceiling is yours.
How do you ask for a shortlist with the exact model and size?
Now you want options, not a single "best" gift. Two or three per person is enough. Each row needs the exact model and the size. Price, shipping, and the return window stay blank until you copy them off the retailer page. That is the whole point of options and tradeoffs: you see what you give up, and you choose.
Using only the notes I approved, give a shortlist. Do not invent prices, star ratings, awards, discounts, ship dates, or return rules.
For each person, give 2 options. For each option include:
- exact product name and model, or NOT LISTED
- size, color, or version that matches my note, or NOT LISTED
- why it fits a like I typed, in one line
- the dislike or past gift it avoids
- price: CHECK THE RETAILER PAGE
- shipping and the last day it can still arrive by my deadline: CHECK THE RETAILER PAGE
- return window: CHECK THE RETAILER PAGE
If you are looking with shopping research, I will open the merchant link myself. Do not tell me to check out in the chat.
If a row would break my budget ceiling, mark it OVER THE CEILING I SET and do not hide it in a bundle.
Then stop.
Read the shortlist against the notes before you like it. If a row repeats a past gift, cut it. If the size is NOT LISTED and the note required a size, that row is not ready.
When two rows are both possible, paste the two pages into Compare two products before you buy either one. Do not ask which one "people love."
How do you use shopping research if you see it, and keep ads out of the list?
OpenAI's help page says you can start shopping research from products already in the chat: select one or more, then choose Research. The November 2025 announcement says you can also ask a shopping question, tap the shopping-research suggestion, or select shopping research from the plus menu. You may be asked a follow-up about brand, size, or what you care about more. Answer from the notes you already wrote. Do not add a new budget in that follow-up.
The help page says ads are separate from shopping research. If you see an ad, leave it out of the shortlist. The shopping-with-search help page says ads are also separate from product results, and that some listings can offer Instant Checkout. Skip that button on this guide. Open the retailer page.
The help page says results are organic and that chats are not shared with retailers. It also says some retailers block automated access, so a missing store is not a verdict on the store. Open it yourself if you already shop there.
Prices in the buyer's guide are not the price you pay. The help page says to confirm price, taxes, fees, shipping, availability, size, and color on the retailer site, and to read the return and warranty policy there. The announcement says shopping research can be wrong about price and availability, and to visit the merchant site for the accurate details.
I am using shopping research for [person] only.
Notes you must follow: [paste that one note].
Budget for this person: [amount]. Deadline: [date].
Ask me your follow-up questions one at a time. Use only my notes.
When you show a pick, include the merchant link and write CHECK THE RETAILER PAGE next to price, shipping, and returns.
Do not check out. Do not treat an ad as a pick. If you are unsure the model or size matches my note, write NOT LISTED.
Then stop after the buyer's guide.
If the control is not on your account, paste two product pages into the Step 3 prompt instead. A missing button is not a reason to trust a remembered price.
How do you check every price, then write the total yourself?
Open every link you might buy. On that retailer page, write down the price you see, the shipping cost, the delivery date the page promises, and the return window in the seller's words. If the page does not say, the cell stays unknown. Do not ask the chat to fill it.
Then paste only the numbers you just wrote. The chat may add those numbers. It may not add a new one.
Here are the rows I checked on the retailer pages today, [date]. Use only these numbers. If a cell says unknown, leave it unknown. Do not look up a new price.
[person] | [exact model and size] | price I saw: [amount] | shipping I saw: [amount or unknown] | arrives by, as the page states: [date or unknown] | return terms in the page's words: [paste or unknown]
Add a total for the rows I marked KEEP. Show the math. If the total is over my ceiling of [amount], say OVER and name the row I could drop. Do not suggest a new product. Then stop.
If the total is over the ceiling, drop a row and add again. A second opinion from the chat does not change the ceiling. If a delivery date on the page is after your deadline, that gift is out, even if the price is attractive.
You pay on the retailer page, after that check. The chat does not buy.
What does a worked example look like?
You have three people. You write one note each. Your brother likes fishing and already has the reel you gave him last year. Your niece likes drawing and you know the shirt size because you asked. A friend does not drink, so a bottle is out. You set a ceiling you can spend this month, and you set the Friday before the visit as the day every gift has to be in hand. You do not type their addresses.
The first reply tries to name products. You delete them and keep the notes. One note has no like and no limit. You text that person, or you pick a category you already know they use, and you type it yourself. You do not let the chat guess a hobby.
The shortlist comes back with CHECK THE RETAILER PAGE on every price. One row says NOT LISTED for size. Your niece's note required a size, so that row is out until a page shows the size. You open the merchant links. On one page the delivery date is after your Friday. That gift is out even though the chat liked it. You copy the prices and the return sentences off the pages that still qualify. You paste those numbers back and ask for a total. The total is over your ceiling. You drop the extra, add again, and the math uses only numbers you typed.
You do not tap Instant Checkout. You pay on the retailer page whose return terms you just read. An ad under the chat never makes the list.
What mistakes should you avoid?
These are the misses that waste the result. Skip them before you send anything.
Common mistakes
- Asking for "the best Black Friday deals" with no people, no ceiling, and no date.
- Keeping a price the chat typed instead of the price on the retailer page.
- Treating an ad as a shopping-research pick. OpenAI says those are separate.
- Letting the chat check out, including Instant Checkout. This guide stops at the retailer page.
- Repeating last year's gift because the note never listed it.
- Pasting card numbers, addresses, or a child's school into the prompt.
- Raising the budget because the shortlist looked good.
When should you not use AI for this?
Some jobs should stay with you. If one of these is true, close the chat.
- You want permission to skip the retailer page. OpenAI's help says the chat can be wrong about price and stock. Open the page.
- The purchase is a loan, a medical device, or anything a qualified person should advise. This page does not do that. Use the official source for that decision.
- A teacher assigned the write-up. Plan a real gift if you are buying one. Write the assignment yourself. Follow your teacher's rules.
- The month cannot hold the ceiling. Fix the month on the budget guide before you shop.
What should you keep private?
First names, likes, sizes, and a budget are enough. Leave off street addresses, card numbers, account logins, school names, and medical details. If shopping research might use ChatGPT memory, turn memory off when you do not want old chats in the gift list. OpenAI's help says you can do that in personalization settings, and that these chats are not shared with retailers. The wider rule is Keep your data private with AI.
What should you check before you use it?
Answer each line before you pay.
Director check: look before you use it
- Does every person still have a note with a like, a dislike, and a past gift? If a note is empty, do not shop that row yet.
- Is the total made only of prices you saw on retailer pages today? If the chat added a number, delete it.
- Did you read the shipping date and the return terms on that same page? A ship date or a return window from the chat does not count.
- Is every row under the ceiling you set, including shipping? If not, drop a gift. Do not raise the ceiling inside the chat.
- Did you leave ads and in-chat checkout out of the decision? You buy on the retailer page.
- Would you still want this if it missed the deadline? If the page cannot deliver in time, it is not a gift for that day.
What is one extra tip?
When two surviving rows are close, paste both pages into Compare two products before you buy either one and decide from the must-haves you already wrote. If the ceiling collides with rent and groceries, sort the month on Make a monthly budget before you add anyone back. The meal is a different cart: Plan Thanksgiving dinner with AI. Choosing among the rows, without asking the chat what you should do, is Ask for options and tradeoffs before you decide. More home guides are on Life and Shopping.
What else do people ask?
Open a question. The short answer under it is the one to use.
Can ChatGPT buy the gift for me?
Not on this page. OpenAI's shopping research help says to confirm the price, taxes, fees, shipping, size, and the return policy on the retailer's site before you buy. A different help page says some products can show Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT. This guide does not use that. You open the retailer page and you pay there.
Are the product prices in the chat real?
Treat them as unchecked. OpenAI says shopping research can be wrong about price and stock, and that a listed price can lag the merchant. The number that counts is the one on the retailer page while you still have it open.
Are ads the same as shopping research?
No. OpenAI's shopping research help says ads are separate from shopping research. The shopping-with-search help page also says product results are not ads. A labeled ad is not a pick on your shortlist.
What if I do not see shopping research?
Use any chat and paste the product pages yourself. OpenAI's help describes shopping research as something you start from products in the chat, or, on the announcement, from a suggestion or the plus menu. If those controls are missing, do not hunt for a hidden button. The shortlist still works from pages you paste.
Can a student use this for class?
You can plan a real gift you are buying. If a teacher assigned a paper or a project, you write what you turn in. Follow your teacher's rules. The chat's shortlist is not the assignment.
