Make a monthly budget from the numbers you already have
To make a monthly budget with AI, enter the income and bills you already know and ask it to sort them. You supply the amounts. It does not know your rent.
Next step: do Step 1. Copy the box, fill in the blanks, and paste it into the chat.
A prompt is the message you paste. A Director check is a short look before you use the result.
What you'll need
- Last month's take-home pay, from a pay stub or your own notes
- A list of bills and spending you can name (rent, groceries, transit, subscriptions)
- Nothing secret: no passwords, no full card numbers
Step 1: Paste amounts, not a vibe
Help me make a monthly budget from these real numbers. Do not invent amounts. If I left something out, ask me for it.
Take-home pay last month: [amount]
Bills and spending I know:
[item: amount]
Organize this as:
1. Needs (housing, utilities, food, transport, minimum debt payments)
2. Wants
3. Anything that looks like a subscription I might have forgotten to list. Ask, don't guess the price.
4. What's left after the needs I listed
5. Three questions I should answer before I change anything (for example which want I would pause)
Use only my numbers. Write "you didn't list this" instead of filling a gap.
Step 2: Add what you forgot
Most first passes miss cash, kids' costs, or annual bills. Add them with real amounts. Then rerun only if the picture changed.
Step 3: Pick one change you will actually make
Using only the numbers above, show two versions of next month:
A) No changes
B) I pause [one want you chose] and put that amount toward [a bill or a savings label you choose]
Do not suggest a new income or a price I didn't give you.
Keep it to a short table.
Director check: look before you use it
- Does every dollar trace to a number you supplied? If the chat filled in a "typical" rent or grocery bill, delete that row.
- Did you paste a password, full account number, or a photo of your card? If yes, remove it from the chat and change the password.
- Is the one change small enough to do this month? A budget you won't follow is a story.
- Are you making a legal, tax, or debt decision from this chat alone? Use it to see the month, then ask a qualified person before you act on those.
One extra tip
If these numbers already live in a spreadsheet, describe the columns and paste a few rows with the amounts you have. The spreadsheet formula workflow shows how to ask for the formula without uploading your whole financial life.
Next month, do not rebuild this page from scratch. Use Run a monthly budget check-in and swap in the new amounts.
Common questions
Do I have to upload my bank login?
No. Never paste passwords or full account numbers. A list of amounts and what they were for is enough.
What if my income changes every month?
Use last month's actual deposits, and say that it varies. Ask for a plan based on the lower month, not a guessed average the chat made up.
Can this replace a financial advisor?
No. This is a sorting exercise so you can see your own month. For debt, taxes, or a big decision, talk to a qualified person.
