Ask for a tool, not an answer

Director

To get a useful answer, ask for a small tool you can try instead of a wall of text. A savings calculator, a bill splitter, a side-by-side comparison, or a schedule counts. Then check the math and the assumptions on a number you already know.

Next step: copy the first prompt that matches your task. Fill in the brackets. Send only that.

A prompt is the message you paste. An approval gate is a stop you control. A checkpoint is a pause after one phase. School pages teach. They do not do the homework. Follow your teacher's rules.

How do you do it?

Do the steps in order. Each line is one action, and you stop at the end of that action.

  1. 1 Notice the wall of text. If the reply is something you have to read and cannot try, ask again for a tool. A tool has inputs you can change and a result you can check.
  2. 2 Name the tool and the inputs. Say what it is: a calculator, a splitter, a side-by-side, or a schedule. List the numbers you will type. Say which formula or rule to use. Tell it not to invent a rate, a fee, or a fact.
  3. 3 Ask where it will appear. In ChatGPT, Intelligent UI can put the tool in the chat when your account shows GPT-6. In Claude, ask for an artifact. In Gemini, ask for a Canvas app. If you do not see that control, ask for a table you can recalculate by hand.
  4. 4 Check one number you already know. Type a case you can do on paper. If the tool disagrees, stop. Read the assumption. Do not use it on the real numbers until that case matches.

Work

What prompt fits “Two options, side by side”?

A paragraph that says “option A is better” is the chat deciding. A side-by-side lets you see the tradeoff. You still pick.

Do not tell me what to choose. Do not write a memo.

Build a side-by-side comparison I can read in the chat.
Option A: [name and the facts I typed].
Option B: [name and the facts I typed].
Rows: cost, time, what we give up, and what I might be wrong about.
Use only numbers I typed. If a cost is missing, write COST UNKNOWN. Do not estimate it.
If you can show this as a small interactive comparison, do that. If you cannot, make a table.
Then stop. I will pick.

School

What prompt fits “A study schedule you can move”?

The tool holds the hours. It does not do the assignment. You still study, and you still follow the teacher’s rules.

This is for learning. Do not write anything I will turn in. Follow my teacher's rules.

Build a schedule view for my study blocks. I need to move a block and see the week.
Class times that cannot move: [day and time, or none].
Test or due date: [date].
Minutes I can actually use: [list].
Topics I will practice, in my words: [list].

Each block should say what I will do in my own words, such as "answer three questions with the book closed."
Do not put "write the essay" or "solve the problem set" on the schedule.
If a time is missing, write MISSING. Do not invent a class.
If you can make this something I can edit on screen, do that. If not, make a table.
Then stop.

Life

What prompt fits “A calculator or a splitter you can check”?

The before message is “how much will this save?” or “split this dinner fairly.” That comes back as a paragraph. The after message is a tool with your numbers, and a case you can do on paper.

Build one small tool I can use in the chat. Do not give me a paragraph instead.

Tool: [savings calculator, or bill splitter].

If it is savings:
Starting amount, monthly amount I add, yearly rate, and years are numbers I will type.
Say whether the interest is simple or compounded. Use only the rule I name.
Do not invent a rate, a bank, or a fee.
Check case: 100 to start, 0 added, 10 percent, 1 year, simple interest. The total is 110. If your tool shows anything else, stop and name the assumption.

If it is a bill splitter:
Bill, tax, tip percent, and the number of people are numbers I will type.
Show each share and the sum of the shares.
The sum must equal the bill plus tax plus tip. If it does not, stop.
Check case: bill 20, tax 0, tip 0, 2 people. Each person owes 10.

Do not ask for an account number. If you cannot make the tool interactive, show the arithmetic in a table I can redo.

What mistakes should you avoid?

These are the misses that waste the result. Skip them before you send anything.

  • Asking “what should I do?” and accepting the first paragraph.
  • Trusting a calculator because it has buttons. The buttons can still use the wrong formula.
  • Leaving out whether interest is simple or compounded, then treating the total as a fact.
  • Putting a real account number, a password, or someone else’s private amount into a tool you might share.
  • Using a school tool to produce the assignment. A schedule or a quiz is studying. A finished paper is not.

Where does this come from?

These are public pages. The note after each link is what that page says, in plain words.

  • OpenAI, “GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone” (October 7, 2026). OpenAI says Intelligent UI can answer with interactive pieces, including a side-by-side comparison, and that you can ask for a tool such as a savings calculator, a bill splitter, or a game. A plan can show how the timing fits together. The announcement says the rollout started that day for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise in the Chat tab, and would expand to Free and Go the next day, with GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go. Pro reasoning does not include Intelligent UI. Work and Codex models were not part of that release.
  • OpenAI Help, “GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT”. The current help article says GPT-6 is rolling out in Chat to eligible Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business users. Intelligent UI can mix text, visuals, and interactive elements when you use GPT-6 from Instant through Extra High. It is not available on Pro effort, which uses GPT-6 Astra. Older desktop apps do not support it. Use ChatGPT on the web, or an updated mobile app. There is no separate Intelligent UI quota. On the web, Settings, then turning off Layout and visuals, reduces visual elements. It does not switch the whole answer to text only. Free and Go are described here as GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-6. That disagrees with the October 7 announcement, which said Free and Go would get GPT-6 Luna the next day. If you do not see GPT-6, it is not on this account yet.
  • Anthropic Help, “What are artifacts and how do I use them?”. Anthropic says an artifact can be a small interactive tool. It opens beside the chat. You can ask for one in a conversation. Artifacts are on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. They need Cloud code execution and file creation turned on, under Settings, then Capabilities, or under Organization settings on Team and Enterprise. On iPhone and Android, the help page describes asking for a design, a deck, or a doc. If the panel does not appear, use claude.ai.
  • Google Gemini Help, “Create docs, apps, and more with Canvas”. Google says you can make an app in Canvas. On a computer, go to gemini.google.com, open Canvas from below the text box, describe what you want, and submit. You must be signed in. If you do not see Canvas, it is not on this account. When you share an app by a public link, anyone with that link can view and edit the data associated with the app.

What else do people ask?

Open a question. The short answer under it is the one to use.

What should I ask for instead of an explanation?

A small tool with inputs you control: a savings calculator, a bill splitter, a side-by-side comparison, or a schedule. OpenAI’s October 7, 2026 announcement names a savings calculator and a bill splitter, and says a comparison can work side by side. You still check the result.

What if I do not see an interactive tool?

Ask for a table and do the arithmetic yourself. OpenAI’s help article says Intelligent UI needs GPT-6 in Chat, from Instant through Extra High, on an account where it has rolled out. It is not on Pro effort, and the older desktop apps do not support it. The October 7 announcement said Free and Go would get it the next day. The current help article still describes Free and Go as GPT-5.6 Luna. If GPT-6 is missing, it is not on your account yet.

Does this work in Claude or Gemini?

Yes when the control is on your account. Anthropic says you can ask for an artifact, including a small interactive tool, beside the chat. Google says you can make an app in Canvas at gemini.google.com. If you do not see the panel, use the table version of the same prompt.

How do I check the math?

Pick a case you can do on paper. One year of simple interest, or a bill split with no tip, is enough. If the tool disagrees, read the assumption and do not use it on the real numbers. A sure layout is not a checked total.

Will this do my homework?

No. A schedule can hold the hours. A quiz can wait for your answer. The tool does not write the work you turn in. Follow your teacher’s rules.
