Write your performance self-review with AI

Scriptwriter

To write a performance self-review with AI, tell it to ask you up to five questions, one at a time, and to draft only from the facts you type. Any missing number or result stays marked Add detail here. Never let it invent a metric or a compliment, and check every claim against your own records before you submit.

A prompt is the message you paste. A Director check is a short look before you use the result.

Who is this for?

This page is for the self-review you have to turn in, usually near the end of the year, when the form wants what you did, what got in the way, and what you want next. You want a draft that sounds like you and that you can defend line by line. You do not want a chat that invents a stronger year.

The chat was not in your meetings. OpenAI's prompt engineering help says to be clear and specific, and to give enough context for the model to understand what you are asking. Context, on this page, is the facts you type after it asks. A missing fact is not a fact the chat may guess.

The habit is Let the AI interview you first. Up to five questions, one at a time, then a summary, then your OK, then a draft. The limits on what it must not invent are Set the limits before you ask. A reply that could belong to any employee is Stop generic AI answers.

A weekly note your manager already reads is a different page: Write a weekly status update. Practice for a conversation about a new job is Prep for a job interview with AI. This page is the review of the job you already have.

What do you need before you start?

Write this down before you open the chat. The note is the brief.

  • The form's questions, copied in your words, and the date it is due
  • A list of work you actually did. Projects, customers, classes you taught, shifts you covered. Names only if you are allowed to share them
  • Results you can point to. A number only if you can find it in a record you already have. If you cannot find it, write UNKNOWN
  • One thing that slipped, and the real reason, in a sentence you would say out loud
  • What you want next year, if the form asks. A skill, a project, or a support you need. Not a speech
  • For a review of someone else, your notes from the year and the company's rule about what you may paste. Not their private messages

You do not need a paid plan.

When should you not use AI for this?

Skip the chat if any of these are true.

  • The form is a legal, medical, or disciplinary record. Write that one yourself, or use the tool your company named. This page will not tell you what to put in a complaint or a warning.
  • You were about to paste a coworker's review, a salary list, a medical note, or a message marked confidential. Keep your data private with AI is the line.
  • You want the chat to "make this sound like I exceeded every goal." If the record does not say that, the draft cannot say that.
  • A teacher assigned a reflection to turn in, and the rules say you write it. You still write it. The chat can ask you questions. It does not hand you the file.

How do you let it interview you, one question at a time?

A self-review fails when the first message is "write my review." The chat fills the blanks with a typical employee. You answer the questions. It does not answer them for you.

Five questions is the cap. One at a time means you can stop a bad question before it becomes a paragraph. If you do not know an answer, say UNKNOWN. Do not ask it to remember your year.

Do not write my review. Do not praise me. Do not invent projects, dates, or numbers.

I need a self-review for [role] due [date]. The form asks: [paste the questions].
What I already know I did: [short list, or "ask me"].
What I will not claim: results I cannot point to, praise I did not earn, other people's private details.

Ask me up to 5 questions, one at a time. Wait for my answer before the next question.
Ask about what I did, what changed because of it, what slipped, and what I want next.
If I say I do not know, write UNKNOWN. Do not guess.
After my answers, stop. Do not draft yet.

Work is the prompt above. It is your job.

School, for a class reflection or a campus-job review you will write yourself. If the rules say no AI, do not send this.

This is for learning. Do not write anything I will turn in. Follow my teacher's rules.

Do not write my reflection. Do not praise me. Do not invent activities, hours, or grades.

The assignment asks: [paste the prompt].
It is due [date].
What I remember, in my words: [a few lines, or "ask me"].

Ask me up to 5 questions, one at a time, about what I actually did. Wait for my answer.
If I say I do not know, write UNKNOWN.
After my answers, stop. Do not draft a paragraph I could submit.

Life, for a personal year note you are keeping, not a form you submit to an employer.

Do not write a speech about my year. Do not invent wins.

This note is for me. I will not submit it as someone else's review.
What I want to remember: [work, family, health, money, or "ask me"].
What I will not exaggerate: [list, or "anything I cannot point to"].

Ask me up to 5 questions, one at a time. Wait for my answer.
If I say I do not know, write UNKNOWN.
Then stop. Do not draft yet.

Read the questions before you answer them. If a question assumes a project you did not do, say so and tell it to drop that project. Let the AI interview you first is this stop.

How do you approve what it understood before it writes?

When the questions are done, ask for a summary and nothing else. You are checking that it heard you. A summary that adds a metric is a summary you send back.

Summarize what I told you. Use my words where you can.
List each fact, and write UNKNOWN next to anything I did not answer.
Do not add a result, a date, or a compliment.
Do not draft the review. Stop and wait until I say the summary is right.

If a line is wrong, correct it in your own sentence. Do not say "looks good" if you skimmed it. That approval is Ask for a plan before the work applied to a short summary. The draft waits.

How do you draft only from the facts you gave?

Now it can write. The draft has to point at your answers. A sentence with no fact behind it gets cut, or it gets the marker in the next step.

The summary above is approved. Do not add facts.

Write a self-review I can edit, in plain sentences, for [the form or the reader].
Use only the approved summary.
Where a form question has no fact from me, write exactly: Add detail here.
Do not invent a number, a percent, a ranking, or praise I did not say.
Keep my voice short. No "I am thrilled to report."
Then stop.

If you are writing about someone on your team, use the manager prompt in Step 6 instead of this one. Do not mix their private life into your own review.

How do you mark every gap as Add detail here?

The marker is the point. A smooth paragraph hides the hole. You want to see the hole before your manager does.

Read the draft against the approved summary.
For each sentence, say which of my facts it uses.
If a sentence uses none, replace it with: Add detail here.
If a sentence adds a number or a compliment I did not type, delete that sentence and write: Add detail here.
Do not fill the gaps. Then stop.

You fill a gap only with a fact you can point to. Open the doc, the ticket, the calendar, or the note you wrote at the time. If you still cannot find it, the gap stays a gap. Catch facts the AI made up is the same check.

How do you check every claim against your own records?

The chat cannot see your records. You can. Read the draft out loud. For each claim, point at the place it came from. If you cannot point, the claim comes out before you submit.

Work, after the draft exists.

Do not improve the writing. I am checking facts.

Here is the draft:
[paste]

I will say, for each claim, FOUND or NOT FOUND after I look at my own notes.
Until I do that, list every claim that is a number, a date, a name, or a result.
Do not tell me they are true. Then stop.

You do the FOUND and NOT FOUND pass yourself. A claim marked NOT FOUND is deleted or rewritten with the real detail. Then you submit. The chat does not submit.

School stays a practice pass. You still write the sentences that go to the teacher.

Life stays a note to yourself. You still delete a win you cannot remember clearly. A diary that invents the year is not a record.

How do you rewrite a teammate's review in your own voice?

A review of someone else is not a place to paste their life. You may know about an illness, a family crisis, pay, or a complaint. Leave it out unless the company's form asks for a fact you are allowed to record, and even then use the tool your company named if the material is confidential.

The draft is a starting pile of your observations. The sentences that get filed have to be sentences you would say.

Do not write a review I can file as-is. Do not invent praise or problems.

I am the manager. This is about [first name or role], not about their private life.
What I observed this year, in my notes: [paste only work facts you are allowed to share].
What I will not include: health, family, pay I was told not to share, and anything they told me in confidence.
A sample of my voice, from a note I already wrote: "[one or two sentences you wrote]".

Ask me up to 5 questions, one at a time, about the work. Wait for my answers.
Then summarize. Wait for my OK.
Then give me bullets I can rewrite, using only those facts.
Mark any missing example as: Add detail here.
Do not rank them against anyone else. Do not write the final review. Then stop.

You rewrite the bullets in your own words before they go in the form. Show the AI an example is the voice sample. It matches your pattern. It does not copy a private note about someone else.

What mistakes should you avoid?

These are the misses that waste the result. Skip them before you send anything.

Common mistakes
  • Starting with "write a glowing self-review" and pasting nothing you did.
  • Letting it turn UNKNOWN into a round number.
  • Asking it to sound more senior than the work was.
  • Pasting a teammate's review "for comparison."
  • Filing the manager's draft without rewriting it.
  • Submitting before you can point at each claim.

What should you keep private?

Your review can be fine to paste into a work account your company approved. A personal chat is a different choice. Follow the company rule. Strip customer names if the sentence does not need them. Do not paste anyone else's performance review, a medical detail, or a salary figure you were told to keep quiet. "I led the Tuesday migration and the rollback took two days" is a fact. A coworker's home situation is not context.

What should you check before you use it?

Answer each line below. If one is still a no, do not use the result yet.

Director check: look before you use it
  • Did it ask, or did it guess? If the first reply was a full review, delete it and send Step 1 again.
  • Is every number one you can find? If not, it is still Add detail here.
  • Would you say this sentence out loud to your manager? If you would wince, cut it.
  • Did it praise you for something you did not claim? Delete the praise.
  • If this is about someone else, did their private life stay out? Health, family, and confidential pay do not go in the chat or in the form unless the company already told you to record that fact in the official tool.
  • Is this a class assignment? You write what you turn in. Follow your teacher's rules.

What is one extra tip?

Keep the approved summary with the copy you submit. Next year you will not have to reconstruct the year from a chat. The weekly version of the same honesty is Write a weekly status update. More job guides are on Job search and Work.

What else do people ask?

Open a question. The short answer under it is the one to use.

How do I write a performance self-review with AI?

Tell the chat to interview you, one question at a time, about what you did, what changed, and what you would do differently. Approve a short summary of your answers. Then ask for a draft that uses only those facts. You check it against your notes, your calendar, and any record your company already gave you before you submit.

Can the AI fill in numbers I do not remember?

No. If you do not know the number, the line stays marked Add detail here. You look it up or you leave it out. A made-up percent, a team size, or a dollar amount does not belong in a review.

Should I ask it to make me sound more impressive?

No. Ask it to use the facts you gave and your own voice. Praise you did not earn, and a result you cannot point to, is the line a manager will question. OpenAI's prompting help says a prompt should give enough context for the model to understand the ask. The context here is your year, not a better year.

How do I write a review for someone on my team?

Use the same interview, then a draft, then a rewrite in your own voice. Leave out health details, pay you were told not to share, and anything the person told you in confidence. Do not paste their private messages. Follow your company's rule about what may go into a personal chat.

Can a student use this?

You can use the interview for a self-assessment you will actually write. If a teacher assigned the reflection, you write what you turn in. Follow your teacher's rules. The chat does not complete the assignment.

What should I keep out of the chat?

Other people's private details, a coworker's review, medical information, and anything marked confidential. Your own public results are enough. The wider line is on Keep your data private with AI.
