Write a letter with AI that asks for one real thing

To write a letter with AI, give the facts and the one result you want, then send a short letter in your words. Do not let it invent a law, a dollar amount, or a case number.

Next step: do Step 1. Copy the box, fill in the blanks, and paste it into the chat.

A prompt is the message you paste. A Director check is a short look before you use the result.

Life๐Ÿ›  ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot (free)โฑ 20 minutesโœ… A short letter you can send

What you'll need

  • What happened, in a few facts you can prove
  • The one result you want: a thank-you sent, a refund, or a correction
  • The address or form where it actually goes

For a longer complaint about one bad purchase or bill, use Write a polite complaint letter and follow that page's steps. Do not copy them here.

Step 1: Pick the letter and ban invented law

Help me write one short letter. Under 200 words. Firm and polite.
Do not invent a law, a case number, a dollar amount, or a date.
If I did not paste an official sentence, do not cite my "rights."

Type of letter: [thank-you / refund request / credit-report dispute]
Who it is to: [name or office]
Facts I can prove:
[paste]
The one thing I want: [paste]
Tone: plain. No insults. No "to whom it may concern" if I gave you a name.

Step 2: Use the shape that matches the job

Thank-you: one specific thing they did, and no ask, unless you truly have one.

Refund: what you paid, the date, what you received, and the amount you want back. That amount has to be a number you paid, not a number the chat thinks is fair.

Credit-report dispute: the item that is wrong, why it is wrong, in your words, and what the report should say instead. If you are in the United States, get the report from AnnualCreditReport.com, the official site for free weekly reports, and follow that bureau's dispute instructions. If you are elsewhere, use your country's official consumer or credit agency. Do not use a link the chat invents. Do not pay a "credit repair" stranger who found you first.

Step 3: Edit, then send it on the real channel

Here is my edited letter: [paste].
Point out any sentence that adds a fact, a law, or a dollar amount I did not give you.
Do not rewrite the whole letter.

Send it through the company's form, the bureau's dispute page, or the person's actual address. Keep a copy. Do not put your password, full card number, or government ID in the letter. If a form asks for an ID number, type it on that official form yourself. Do not paste it into the chat.

Common mistakes
  • Asking the chat to "cite my rights" with no official text in the prompt. It will invent a law.
  • Combining a thank-you and a complaint in one note. Send the thank-you alone. Put the complaint on the complaint-letter page.
  • Disputing a credit item you simply dislike but that is accurate. Dispute errors. An accurate debt does not become an error because the letter sounds firm.
  • Threatening to sue because it feels strong. Take threats out unless a qualified person told you to include them.
Privacy: what not to paste

Letters get forwarded. Write as if a stranger will read them. Leave out account numbers, medical details, and a child's full name unless the form requires them, and then put those on the official form, not in the chat. This page is not legal advice. If money, housing, or a lawsuit is involved and you are unsure, ask a qualified advisor or a government consumer office before you send a legal claim.

Director check: look before you use it
  • Is every date and amount one you checked? If not, it does not go in the letter.
  • Did a law appear that you did not paste from an official page? Delete it.
  • Are you asking for one thing? Two asks get neither.
  • Are you sending it on the official channel? A perfect letter in the chat was not sent.
One extra tip

If the letter is a tense work email instead of a letter to a company, switch to Write a difficult work email. The tone checks are similar. The address is not. More everyday writing is on the Life hub.

Common questions

When should I use the complaint-letter page instead?

Use that page when the whole job is a complaint about an order, a bill, or a repair. This page is the set: a thank-you, a refund ask, or a credit-report dispute, and it points you back there for the longer complaint. Do not write the same letter twice.

Can the letter cite my legal rights?

Only if you paste a sentence you copied from an official page. Otherwise tell the chat not to name a law. A made-up statute makes a true complaint look false.

Will this fix my credit?

No. A letter can describe an error you found on your report. You still follow the bureau's own dispute steps. This page is not a credit-repair promise.
