Redesign a room with AI using a photo and a real budget

To redesign a room with AI, share a photo of the room plus your style and a budget you chose. Ask for a plan and a shopping list. Check every price yourself before you buy.

Next step: do Step 1. Copy the box, fill in the blanks, and paste it into the chat.

A prompt is the message you paste. A Director check is a short look before you use the result.

Life๐Ÿ›  ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot (free), if your account can take a photoโฑ 25 minutesโœ… A plan you can shop from

What you'll need

  • A photo of the room in daylight, if your tool lets you attach images
  • A style in plain words, such as "calm and light" or "kid-proof"
  • A maximum amount you are willing to spend. If you do not have a number, decide one before you start. Do not ask the chat what you should be able to afford

Step 1: Describe the room as it is

Help me restyle this room. I attached a photo. If you cannot see a photo, ask me to describe it. Do not invent a layout.

Must keep: the walls, windows, doors, and anything I mark as stay.
Can change: furniture and decor.
Style: [plain words]
Budget I will not pass: [your number]
Who uses the room: [adults, kids, pets]

First, describe what you see: the big furniture, the light, and what makes the room feel cramped or dark.
Then stop and ask me what I refuse to get rid of.

Correct its description before you let it redesign anything. If it invents a window, say so.

Step 2: Ask for a restyle and a list, not a shopping spree

Restyle the room in that style, under my budget.
Keep the walls, windows, and the pieces I said stay.

Give me:
1. What to remove, keep, or move
2. Up to 8 things to buy, as types (a neutral sofa, a floor lamp), not brand links
3. A guess of the cost only as "I do not know the price. You fill this in at the store."
4. The first purchase, if I can only buy one thing

If you can make an image, make one mockup that keeps the windows in the same place. If you cannot, skip the image.
Do not tell me the project will raise my home's value.

Step 3: Price the list yourself

Take the list to a store site or a store. Write real prices next to each type. If the total is over your number, cut items. Ask the chat to redo the plan only after you have real prices:

Here are real prices I found:
[item: price]

My budget is still [number].
Cut or swap the list so the total of these prices fits.
Do not add a new item with a made-up price.

Step 4: Change one thing first

Buy or move the first item only. Live with it for a week. A full cart on day one is how the budget disappears. The outside version of this project is Design your yard.

Common mistakes
  • Asking for a "complete makeover" with no budget number.
  • Trusting a product price in the chat. Stores change prices. The chat is not the store.
  • Letting a mockup move a window or a door you cannot move.
  • Uploading a photo that shows family photos, mail, or a computer screen with personal information. Crop those out first.
Privacy: what not to paste

A room photo can show faces, paperwork, or a screen. Crop the picture before you upload it. You do not need to include your address. Image tools may store uploads under that company's rules. Read them if the room is sensitive. Do not upload a child's face if you can frame the shot without it.

Director check: look before you use it
  • Does the plan keep the walls and windows? If the mockup rebuilt the room, ignore the picture and use the list.
  • Is every price one you saw in a store? If not, it is not a price.
  • Does the total fit the number you set? If not, cut the list.
  • Are you buying one thing first? Do that before a second trip.
One extra tip

If you want a second opinion, paste the same photo and the same budget into a different free tool and ask only what it would cut. Keep the cuts that match your number. More home guides are on the Life hub.

Common questions

What if my chat cannot make a picture?

Use the written plan. A mockup is optional. If the app offers to create an image, ask for one and still read the words. Image tools and limits change by account. If you do not see an upload or an image button, skip that part.

Can it shop for me?

No. It can name the type of thing to buy, such as a floor lamp. You find the actual item and the price. Delete any price it typed unless you saw that price in a store.

Will this work for a rental?

Say that you cannot paint or replace the floor. Put "keep the walls, windows, and floor" in the prompt so it does not plan a renovation you cannot do.
